Jouancy. Le château South of Noyers, at the top of a hill above the river, stands Jouancy, the smallest village of the department. A castle built in the fifteenth century stands there, but cannot be visited.

En repartant de Jouancy un détour par le prieuré de Vausse s’impose. En plein cœur de la forêt domaniale de St Jean, s’élève le prieuré de Vausse, un monastère cistercien à la fois austère et magnifique, fondé au XIIème siècle.

Then you have to go and see the "Prieuré de Vausse" ; A both severe and magnificent Cistercian monastery founded in the twelfth century. It is a well-preserved, unadorned small cloister with very pure lines.

From the twelfth to the fifteenth century, it was a relatively important place where the faithful were coming to. During the crusades, St Marie de Vausse was prayed. It was a good time for monks who were given plenty of gifts. As there were always more and more people, a chapel was built in the fourteenth century. Then decay time came…

In the eighteenth century, the monks dormitory and capitulary-room were burnt down. In 1791 the priory became a national possession and Adrien-Joseph Dumortier bought it. He made a delft-manufactory of it till 1858. Then it became the Petit family’s property. Ernest Petit, an historian, set up his library in the church. His descendants are trying to keep the priory lively through musical and theatrical parties. ("association Vausse Animations")..
